Consolidating file servers
If there is an unexpected error, then the command window that gets initiated by this process will be terminated. After your assessment has finished, you're now ready to import the data into SQL Server for analysis. To consume the assessment JSON file, open Power Shell and run the dma Processor function. After deleting snapshots on a VM either by deleting an individual snapshot or selecting "Delete All" snapshots, you may see the following warning for the VM, stating that disk consolidation is needed."Virtual machine disks consolidation is needed" This can occur when a snapshot has been deleted and removed from snapshot manager, but the consolidation of the VMDKs on disk have failed.Once confirmed I placed the host in maintenance mode, DRS v Motioned all VMs to another host in the cluster and restarted the hostd service.Consolidate on the VM and it completed successfully.
After loading the Power Shell modules into the modules directory and creating an inventory, you need to run a scaled assessment by opening Power Shell and running the dma Data Collector function. This parameter is useful for recreating a single object that has been dropped. The dma Processor function should only take a few seconds to process a single file. The benefit of using a SQL Server table over a CSV file is that you can use the assessment flag column to control the instance / database that gets picked up for assessment, which makes it easier to separate assessments into smaller chunks. You can then span multiple assessments (see the section on running an assessment later in this article), which is easier than maintaining multiple CSV files.
